You can have small icons, and include icons for applications that you want to launch from the buttonbar.
You can shrink the buttonbar so it takes up less space.
You can even move the buttonbar so that it is on the side or top of the screen, rather than the bottom.
You can also create different sets of buttonbar icons, so you always have the group of icons that you want.
